I just bought a 29D which I really like. I have a front loader and back-hoe. I want to get a wood chipper to run off the PTO. Does anyone have any experience with them.

I looked a several used ones and they are pretty expensive. Eventually I passed on the idea. I reasoned that it would be something that I would use once a year or so and I could make many trips to the dump for the cost of something that would spend most it's time sitting around.
Of course, a dump is within a couple miles of each of our properties, the township dumps take brush and there are no tippage fees.
The used chippers I looked also had hammer mill shredders into which fairly wide brush could be fed. Those seemed much more useful than something that only chips up larger diameter stuff. For larger diameter material, a chipper will work to its rating, but the process isn't fast. A unit with a hydraulic feed is nice but expensive.

I have a PATU DC-40, which will take a 4" stick. It's a plain-jane unit, manual feed, does a dandy job for me behind my JD750.
As long as the knives are sharp, manual feed is not a problem, once the stick is started, it'll feed itself if properly trimmed.
I paid $2600 new, they're out there used for around $1800. ....

I have a 10hp chipper that gets used several times a year. There is a non-trivial dump fee here, it is by the trip, not weight. I have a 3 cu-yd dumpster here for used hay and general trash disposal. I can get whole small trees, and a lot of trimmings into the dumpster along with the weeks supply of used hay if I use the chipper. If I don't, it takes two or three weeks to feed the bursh pile into it. I don't like the fire hazard that goes with having a pile of dry brush around during the So. Cal. fire season - so I bought the chipper.
It does a good job when it runs. However, every time the engine on it won't start, which happens every couple of years, I wish it would mount on the tractor and be driven by the pto. The tractor always runs. Unfortunately, the chipper I have was designed to run at around 3,600 rpm so replacing the chipper engine with a support bearing and a tumbler shaft won't work.
That PATU DC-40 is a nice looking unit. That chipper could be aimed right into the dumpster. It would be a very nice setup with that nice discharge chute. I've never seen one used - but if I do, and its in good condition, I just might have it follow me home.
